Mission Statement P.S. 254 strives to provide all students with a secure, nurturing, and stimulating environment in which they can grow academically and socially. We are dedicated to establishing high standards, as well as an appreciation of the cultural diversity of our school community. Parents, teachers, and supervisors work together with the larger community to enable our children to excel, and to become life long learners. Our goal is to support our students on the road to becoming caring and productive citizens in the future. Special Programs PS 254 offers enrichment as well as inclusion classes, chorus, computer science, STEM, music and art programs. Students participate in the Big Brother/Sister program and peer tutoring. Classrooms have 4 PCs per room with Internet access. We have an Open Access Library which serves the entire school.
Extracurricular Activities PS 254 students are given the opportunity to take part in: Class assembly productions, Mosaic Minstrels, Glee Club, Pre-K Pals, Dance Express, a school-wide Dance Festival, Project Read, SPINS Alternatives Violence Prevention Program, various After-School Remediation Programs and Literacy/Math Enrichment Programs.
Our Community We have a very culturally diverse community. We always invite and encourage our community to participate in many school events. Such as... Fall Fest, our community garden, use of our beautiful playground and other activities through the year! P.S. 254 is a National Blue Ribbon School The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors PS 254 for achieving very high learning standards and making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating a safe and welcoming school where students master challenging content. All schools are recognized in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state's highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels. Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state's highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school's subgroups and all students over the past five years. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates for each subgroup are at high levels.
