Homework Policy

Homework Policy

Homework is an important part of the student’s academic year and will be assigned every night.  Homework will provide the students with an opportunity to extend lessons, practice skills, engage in critical thinking and develop good work habits.
Homework can also serve as one form of communication between the teacher and the family.  The student, family and the teacher share the responsibility of homework.

The Student is responsible:
  • to understand all homework assignments by listening to directions, asking questions when something is unclear
  • to gather all the materials needed for the assignments before leaving the classroom
  • to complete all assignments to the best of his/her ability
  • to return materials and assignments on time.
  • to make-up any missed homework assignments

The Family is responsible:
  • to establish a routine and provide an environment that is conducive to doing homework (e.g. a quiet and consistent place and time, necessary materials, etc.)
  • to offer assistance to the student
  • to check that your child has completed the assignment
  • to sign the completed assignments
  • to notify the teacher when the homework presents a problem
  • to read school notices and respond in a timely manner

The Teacher is responsible:
  • to provide purposeful homework
  • to include clear directions and instructions
  • to implement a system for routinely checking homework
  • to communicate to the student and family what is expected for completing homework successfully
  • to communicate with families (in timely fashion) when students are not completing the assignment

  • Reading and math homework is to be assigned every day (including weekends).
  • Homework must be meaningful and never used as a form of a behavioral consequence.
  • Students should be reading independently at home every night.  (Use response logs).  This is one suggested nightly assignment.
  • Teachers must check, review and provide feedback to their students for parents to view.
  • Students must be expected to read and write every night.  Research indicates that students are more successful and increase their reading levels by reading for at least 20 minutes every night.
  • Math homework should be a review from the day’s lesson.
  • Notify parents immediately when students miss homework.
  • Send home packets of homework during the vacation breaks.
  • Homework is not to be checked during the literacy block.
  • Please send home the homework policy and be sure to get a signed tear-off from every parent and child.
